Copy trading futures prop accounts: permissions and risk checks

Check permissions, compare follower loss room and plan for interrupted copying.

By Boxcar Trading4 min read

Can you copy trades across prop accounts?

Yes, some futures prop firms allow copying between accounts you own. Check the exact program, account stage and copier before linking them: permission in an evaluation does not automatically extend to a simulated-funded or live account.

A brass signal hub connects to three separate blue modules with individual control dials.

Boxcar permits built-in and third-party copiers across your own Boxcar accounts. TopstepX makes its Trade Copier available to Trading Combine and Express Funded Accounts, but excludes Live Funded Accounts. These permissions do not establish permission to copy another person's trades or to connect accounts at a different firm.

Check ownership, connections and current limits

A successful login does not establish permission to copy. Check the proposed account combination with each firm if its policy does not cover your setup.

Worked example: the same order can exceed a follower's loss room

Accounts with the same advertised size can have different remaining loss room after previous trades. A copier does not combine that room into a shared allowance.

For a hypothetical example, assume flat accounts, no working orders, sufficient contract allowance and a loss threshold that stays fixed during the trade. Account A has $1,000 of remaining loss room; account B has $150. CME specifies a $5 multiplier for Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures (MES). A 20-point adverse move therefore costs $100 per contract before fees: 20 × $5.

The table assumes a long position exits exactly 20 points below its entry. These are imaginary account conditions, not a Boxcar plan or a recommended position size.

Worked example: the same order can exceed a follower's loss room
Account and quantityLoss room before tradePrice loss at 20 pointsRoom after price loss
A: 2 MES$1,000$200$800
B: 2 MES$150$200Threshold exceeded by $50
B: 1 MES instead$150$100$50

A smaller copied quantity still needs its own checks

The one-contract alternative leaves only $50 before commissions and any worse fill. A stop order does not guarantee the assumed exit price. If the account uses a moving drawdown threshold or a tighter Daily Loss Limit, the fixed-threshold example does not describe its available room.

Confirm how the chosen copier sets whole-contract quantities and what happens when the requested size is unavailable. TopstepX, for example, requires the lead to have the lowest Maximum Position Size in the group. It also warns that follower fill prices and timing can differ.

A missed order can create opposing exposure

Suppose a disconnected follower stays long while you close the lead and open a short. You now have opposite positions across accounts even though the original trade was copied in the same direction. Boxcar prohibits opposing positions in the same or correlated products across separate accounts, including accounts at different firms; its same-account exceptions do not cover that setup.

Check each account's position and order state after an interruption or rejection. NinjaTrader distinguishes submitted, partially filled, filled and rejected orders, as well as a pending cancellation from a confirmed cancellation. A requested exit or cancellation is not confirmation that the account is flat.

Know what stopping the copier actually does

Read the copier's documented stop and unlink behavior before using it with open positions. TopstepX, for example, says switching off its copier mid-trade immediately flattens followers. Do not assume another product behaves the same way.

If copying becomes unreliable, stop new copied entries using the product's documented controls and confirm the result on every affected account. Check remaining positions, working entries and protective orders before sending manual replacements. Replaying an order without checking whether it already filled can add unintended exposure.

TopstepX can unlink followers after a payout request or when scaling tiers no longer match. Before the next session, verify which followers remain linked and recalculate their enabled size and loss room.
